A Heartwarming Knitting Note

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Hi Anissa and friends,
Thought you might like to see the “Horace Mann School knitters” with the completed prayer shawl for our really ill coworker. I tried it on and it just like a cocoon - not at all itchy. Some of the staff made a poem using the beginning letters of Prayer Shawl, added this picture, and then had all the knitters sign it as the Get Well Card. What an awesome gift it turned out to be and people were just falling over each other for turns at the knitting needles.
Regards,
Karin

Baby Sweater Contest is Here - and Almost Done!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Hi All!

If you haven’t voted for your favorite baby sweater - get your tail in here to vote! Voting will take place through April 30th. Those of you wondering what will be next - Summer Wrap and Shawl Contest. This contest will run in May and June and we will have 2 categories: a triangle shawl and a rectangle wrap. All levels of knitters (and crocheters) welcome to participate. I decided this for our next contest theme because of the beautiful shawl Valerie (our first contest winner for her fab socks) made as a shop sample. She used Lorna’s Laces Helen’s Lace and the free pattern that come with the hank of deep purple toned yarn. And then Classic Elite had a free pattern emailed last week for a quick wrap pattern. I attached that pattern for you here. The weather is warming up and I am thrilled to wear a beautiful, light, summertime wrap as the temps heat up! You know me. Happy to have the Spring here and the Summer close.

In other news we have some space left in upcoming classes. A few to mention are:

Knitting 101/ Intro to Knitting - If you have no knitting experience, or have tried a few times but quit because that scarf was just taking too darn long and you got bored, then this is the class for you! This class will teach you the basics, and together we will create something small, manageable and fabulous. Not only will you leave with a finished project, but you’ll have the motivation and the tools to keep knitting! Offered Tuesdays, April 28, May 5, 12, 19 from 6-8 OR Thursdays, April 30, May 7, 14, 21 from 6-8 OR Saturdays 11am-1pm (ongoing start). Classes are $75 (not including materials) for 4 weeks. Join Claire or Katie for this great class!

Intro to Sewing - So you want to learn to sew? Pick your own project and get started. You will learn how to read and follow pattern instructions, cut out patterns and make minor pattern alterations for a better fit. We start sewing the first week so come with a pattern and fabric ready to go. Class description lists supplies needed for this class. This class runs Saturdays April 25, May 2, 9, 16 from 10:30 -12:30pm ($75 for 4 weeks). Join Casey for this beginner class! 2 seats left!

Intro to Sewing - So you want to learn to sew? Pick your own project and get started. We start sewing the first week so come with a pattern and fabric ready to go. Class description lists supplies needed for this class. Starting Tuesday, May 5th from 6-8pm ($75 for 4 weeks). This class will be taught by Moo.

Alterations - Do you have a closet full of “off the rack” clothes that need to be hemmed or a pair of favorite pants that need a zipper replaced? Bring your jeans, jackets, dresses and skirts and learn to do your own alterations. You will also learn to do perfect hand and machine stitches on your delicate fabrics. Some sewing experience is necessary. This one-day workshop is offered Saturdays, April 11 and 25 and May 16 and 30 from 1-4pm ($25). Natalie has rave reviews from this one-day workshop - spend an afternoon learning how to do it yourself.

We also have a few of the Addi’s Clicks available. They are a great purchase! Check out the reviews on Ravelry. I am happy to hold one for you or ship it out. Let us know.

So, pick a class, come in and vote, and enjoy the warm weather!

I hope to talk to you soon!

They do say April Showers…

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

bring May flowers - but man it is crappy outside today. The silver lining- the warmer weather is another month closer!

I got a few calls and comments about missing my email last week and I am sorry. Between here, the high school and home I think I experienced a full week of full moons. It seemed like everything backed up on top of everything else and here I am the week later wondering where the last week went? Oh well. Here I am now.

So the sweater contest is on! Come in and vote for your favorite. They are beautiful. We will get them photographed and posted so you can preview them. You have all month to vote, and since this is done my way, vote everytime you are in the shop (you get one per visit) and help your favorite sweater/knitter win!

Next Friday, Marie Zelmer Wu is back for day of family photography. I hope you can take advantage of this great opportunity to get some Spring pics done in time for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Family and kids portraits make a wonderfully special gift. Check out the samples in shop or visit the youtube site at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_HKq7SesVU to check the slide show out. The ones of Doug & I with the kids are pretty funny. It will be years until we get a real family pic - although it is our real life for sure… no one sitting still at the same time. Please book early so we can get you your preferred time.

Tomorrow night is sweater club and next week is Quick Sew (we haven’t decided a project yet) and that Sunday is Easter so we will be closed for the holiday and not having sock club. For those of you wanting to try your hand at basic quilting and sewing join us in April for our 2nd Weekend Warrior Workshop. I’ll be running a Quick Trip Around the World Quilt class Saturday and Sunday for $150 (not including materials but you get a 20% discount on Amy Butler if you are registered for the class). Check out the current class listing - take a class, plan a party or sign up a kid for summer or April vacation camp.

Thanks - Talk soon,

Annissa
