Description: This 4 week (8 hours) class will provide you with the skills needed and confidence to construct a lined, flat roman shade. The first class will held at a local fabric store where participants will have assistance in selecting fabric and notions for your shade. You will review the correct way to measure your window(s) to assure a proper and custom fit. At the completion of this course you will have a functioning shade and instruction on how to mount and install your beautiful Roman Shade at home. During the series you are welcome to use the sewing machines, when available, to make another shade to compliment the one you’ll work on during class time.
Instructor: Instructor Julie Murphy took her first sewing class at the age of 10 at the Little House in Dorchester. She learned quickly that making clothing was not her passion and began to dabble with window treatment design and fabrication. She recently started her own business “JM Custom Design” which specializes in custom window treatments and accessories.

Specifics: Home Decorating: Roman Shades runs 4 consecutive Wednesdays (May 14, 21, 28 and June 8) from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and is limited to 4 participants. The class cost (not inclusive of materials) is $100 and is due at time of registration. This class requires the participant to purchase the following materials necessary to complete the projects. Please note the 2 lists. Items on List One will be purchased together during the first class held onsite at Sew-Fisticated (at a discount of 10%). List Two are basic necessities that the participant is responsible for him/herself which can be purchased that first night at Sew-Fisticated Fabrics.

List one:

  • Face fabric
  • Lining
  • Thread
  • Rings
  • Micro Cording
  • 1x2 wood for mounting
  • eye screws for mounting
  • optional pull cord mechanism (offered by instructor for $3)


List two:
  • Scissors for cutting fabric
  • Scissors for cutting other materials (cording, trims, etc)
  • Pins
  • Fabric Marking Pen
  • Tape Measure


**Bring a rough measurement of your window so we can estimate the amount of fabric needed.**

All Classes: If you are registered for a sewing class you will be given a certificate good for a one-time 10% discount at Sew-Fisticated Fabrics located at 735 Morrissey Blvd. near Lambert’s Fruit Market. Fabric and patterns can also be purchased at Wal-Mart, Joann Fabrics and Fabric Place.
Maximum class size is 6. Any class may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Refunds will only be made in this circumstance. Any class cancellations will be made at least 1 week before the start of the class. If an individual class session needs to be cancelled, each participant will be notified immediately. In a single session cancellation, the class will be held the week after the last scheduled class.
